Scholars differ. Most jurists hold that the beard must be kept and that shaving is haram, because the Prophet ﷺ commanded to let it grow (agreed upon). The Shafi'i school, in its well-known view, holds that shaving is disliked, and some contemporary scholars allow it for need. Keeping the beard is the safer position.
