Why do Muslim women wear the hijab?

Women, family and marriage Quran · 3 Hadith · 1

Short answer

Most Muslim women who wear hijab do so because they believe God commanded modesty for both men and women, and they choose it as an act of worship and identity. In Islam, hijab is meant to be a choice made out of faith and not forced by others.

The fuller answer

The Quran tells believing men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty, and then tells believing women to do the same and to draw their head coverings over their chests. The majority of scholars of all schools understand this to mean that women cover their hair and body except the face and hands. A minority of Muslims and some modern scholars read the verses differently, and some Muslim women do not cover.

Many women who wear hijab say it makes them feel respected for their mind rather than their looks, and that it is part of who they are. Forcing a woman to wear it, or forcing her to remove it, are both against the Islamic principle that faith cannot be compelled, though some governments and families do just that. A woman should make this choice freely.

From the Quran

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and be modest. That is purer for them. Lo! Allah is aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or fathers or husbands' fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters' sons, or their women, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack vigour, or children who know naught of women's nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto Allah together, O believers, in order that ye may succeed.

O Prophet! Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.

There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.
