Short answer
Most scholars permit temporary methods that are safe and agreed by both spouses, based on the practice of 'azl at the time of the Prophet ﷺ. Permanent sterilization is forbidden unless there is a medical need. Some scholars discourage birth control without a reason. Ask a scholar about your own case.
