Is photography permitted?

Scholars differ General principles

Short answer

Scholars differ. Most contemporary scholars permit photographs, because a camera captures an image and does not draw one, and it is needed for IDs and records. Others forbid photographing living beings, based on hadith that warn against image-makers. Pictures made for worship, or showing indecency, are forbidden by all.
