Is there proof that God exists?

Science, reason and doubt Quran · 4 Hadith · 2

Short answer

Islam argues from reason and from nature: a universe that has a beginning needs a cause, its order and fine balance point to a designer, and human beings have a natural sense of their Creator (fitra). The Quran asks, 'Were they created from nothing, or are they the creators?'

The fuller answer

The Quran repeatedly invites people to look at the alternation of night and day, the rain that revives dead land, the creation of the human being and the stars, as signs for people who think. It does not ask for blind belief: it asks for reflection. Muslim philosophers developed arguments such as the argument from the beginning of the universe and from contingency, which later influenced European thinkers.

Muslims also say that God is known through experience: through prayer, relief after a hardship and the peace that comes from remembering Him. Proof is of different kinds and may not satisfy someone who has decided in advance. Muslims invite honest seekers to ask the questions, read the Quran and ask God sincerely for guidance.

From the Quran

Or were they created out of naught? Or are they the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they are sure of nothing!

Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth and (in) the difference of night and day are tokens (of His Sovereignty) for men of understanding,

So set thy purpose (O Muhammad) for religion as a man by nature upright - the nature (framed) of Allah, in which He hath created man. There is no altering (the laws of) Allah's creation. That is the right religion, but most men know not -

Lo! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of night and day, and the ships which run upon the sea with that which is of use to men, and the water which Allah sendeth down from the sky, thereby reviving the earth after its death, and dispersing all kinds of beasts therein, and (in) the ordinance of the winds, and the clouds obedient between heaven and earth: are signs (of Allah's Sovereignty) for people who have sense.
