Can Muslim women work and get an education?

Women, family and marriage Quran · 2 Hadith · 1

Short answer

Yes. Seeking knowledge is a duty on every Muslim, men and women, and women may work and run businesses. The first wife of the Prophet ﷺ, Khadijah, was a successful merchant who employed him.

The fuller answer

The Quran asks whether those who know are equal to those who do not know, and the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever takes a path to seek knowledge, God makes easy for him a path to Paradise. Women in early Islam were hadith narrators, scholars, doctors and teachers. In today's Muslim world, more women than men are enrolled in universities in several countries, and women have been prime ministers and presidents in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Türkiye, Indonesia and Kosovo.

A woman's income is her own. Where women are denied education or work, as in some places under strict rule, Islamic scholars and Muslim women often say it is a political or cultural restriction and not a religious one.

From the Quran

And the believers, men and women, are protecting friends one of another; they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and they establish worship and they pay the poor-due, and they obey Allah and His messenger. As for these, Allah will have mercy on them. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Is he who payeth adoration in the watches of the night, prostrate and standing, bewaring of the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, (to be accounted equal with a disbeliever)? Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Are those who know equal with those who know not? But only men of understanding will pay heed.
