Is cheese made with rennet halal?

Short answer
It depends on the source of the rennet. Rennet from plants or microbes is halal, and so is rennet from a properly slaughtered calf. Rennet from pigs is haram. For rennet from animals not slaughtered by Islamic rules, scholars differ, and some permit it. Look for the source on the label or choose cheese labelled halal or vegetarian.
